A Google search for the key word “beadwork” will yield over 3 million sites on the Internet. This is an exciting time to play with beads, and artists are using them to make anything from jewelry for adornment, to portraiture, to embellishment of household items, to contemporary sculpture. A plethora of magazines devoted to the art and craft of beadwork has sprung onto the market in the last decade and expositions/trade shows held throughout the United States are focused on beads and design to showcase the incredible diversity of artisans.

Your local bead or craft store holds several classes every month on different beading techniques for those who prefer hands-on learning. They also carry an array of seed, lampwork, ethnic, plastic, metal (gold, sterling, brass, bronze, nickel, etc.), ceramic, semiprecious and precious stone beads, plus tools, beading needles, threads, different types of coated wire, and jewelry findings (clasps, crimp beads, etc.). All of these items can be purchased on the Internet, too (the advertisers in the bead journals are reliable sources).
